Fleas

Fleas are tiny bugs not larger than a tip of a pen. They are typically black, brown or reddish in colour. The most common way for homes to become infested with fleas is through owning pets such as cats and dogs. However, you can still be affected by flea infestation without owning pets. Common transport methods include clothing and belongings that have been in contact with an infestation. Fleas can also remain dormant in empty properties, and be stimulated into action when residency resumes.

Fleas survive by feeding on blood. They sometimes feed on rodents, hence, can carry serious diseases. They have been known to spread Murine typhus disease carried by rodents. Both homeowners and pets can be affected by flea bites. Their bites are itchy and may become sore. You may also develop hives and rashes around the affected areas. This is a telltale sign of flea bite allergy.

Flea Infestation

Here’s how you’ll know your property has been infested by fleas;

  • Your pet seems unusually uncomfortable and constantly scratching which could lead to loss of fur

  • Fleas hopping on carpets, drapery and furnitures

  • Presence of dot-like insects on your pets coat

  • Clustered bites around the ankles, feet and calves

Removing fleas can be a complicated process as they can be situated in different parts of your home. They are very small and they breed rapidly in high numbers.
